Orientation Leader Responsibilities
Position Title: Orientation Leader
Responsible to: Orientation Committee and Orientation Advisor
Responsible for:
- Helping to facilitate the personal growth and success of each club member.
- Empowering club members to make healthy transitions to college life.
- Familiarizing new students to the college, including the campus, academic life, student activities, and college procedures.
- Representing Concordia College in a positive manner.
- Being accepting of self and others.
- Being creative, determined, open-minded, ambitious, energetic, and punctual.
Expectations:
- Have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Abide by all college policies and civil law during the entire selection process, throughout Orientation, and during the remainder of the school year.
- Attendance and punctuality are mandatory.
- Attend spring training session: April 4 (9:20-10:20 a.m.) and April 12 (9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)
- Arrive back and be settled in by Wednesday, August 20, 2008, and have residency in the Fargo-Moorhead area through the end of the first semester.
- Attend fall training sessions: August 21-23 (approximately 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. each day)
- Attend Orientation sessions August 24-27
- Complete a minimum of ten hours of additional peer mentoring throughout the first block.
Job description:
- Be a good role model and advocate for the missions of the college to help facilitate the academic and personal success of each new student.
- Be responsible for meeting with and making the necessary arrangements with your Faculty Mentor.
- Spend time during the semester getting to know your partner.
- Provide input to the Orientation Committee regarding the planning for Orientation.
- Write each of the assigned club members over the summer (including information from the faculty mentor) so that they look forward to Orientation activities and meeting you.
- Read the necessary literature recommended for incoming students before the start of Orientation training.
- Be able to participate in and facilitate discussions during the book read.
- Learn all necessary information in the training manual prior to the start of Orientation.
- Make individual door signs for each club member, and make a club number sign for the Welcome Show with your partner.
- Attend ALL of the required Orientation activities with your club, including seminars, worship services, meetings, tours, convocation, and other Orientation events.
- Participate in the Welcome Show to welcome and entertain new students (i.e. OL & Vol dance).
- Direct club members to scheduled independent activities such as floor meetings, meetings with their advisor, departmental previews, registrations, etc.
- Avoid planning activities conflicting with residence hall planned activities or meetings.
- Utilize training experiences and Orientation Leader training manuals and lead club activities designed to meet Orientation goals, but respect the personal needs of each student.
- Consider costs when planning club activities, being sensitive toward students with limited spending money.
- Refer all problems beyond your expertise to the Orientation Advisor and appropriate campus resources.
- Fill out Orientation evaluations as required.
- Maintain contact with club members throughout the semester to continue peer mentoring and follow-up on students’ transition.
- Remember that students come from diverse backgrounds and have many unique and different personalities therefore, Orientation Leaders must be able to adapt to each student’s uniqueness.
