Finding The Right Fit
By Holly Saari '07

When I was younger I had my heart set on attending a large Minnesota university. But when it came time to make my college decision, I found myself pulled in a different direction. A meeting with one of Concordia College's enthusiastic admissions counselors, a campus visit and a faculty scholarship all gave me exactly what I needed to decide Concordia was where I was called.

Small class sizes and an openness to discussion have played the biggest role in my growth as a person at Concordia. If I'd attended a larger school I'd be spending my time in large lecture classes, not developing the critical thinking and discussion skills I now will have for the rest of my life.

I've also found a strong sense of community at Concordia and plenty of opportunities to get involved, meet more people and put my talents to good use. After two years of serving on the Family Weekend committee, I'll now be chairing Family Weekend 2006. It's such a great way to develop leadership skills and help others do the same. This summer I'll travel with the Corn Feeds for the second time, meeting alumni and celebrating a wonderful Concordia tradition.

Academically, I've served as an editor for two Concordia publications, Afterwork and New Voices, and belong to the English honors society. I participated in a cooperative education experience at New River Press, a publishing company for which I worked as an editor on a book team. I tutor student writers at the Reading and Writing Center and worked two semesters at the Office of Communications and Marketing on campus.

All of these things are preparing me for life after college - both professionally and personally. As I look ahead to graduate school I'm thankful for my time here and happy with how much I've grown.
