Researching Side-By-Side
By Zack Kenz '08
Since my freshman year, I've researched side-by-side with Dr. Doug Anderson, associate professor of math. First, we studied difference equations and then wrote a paper on time delay dynamic equations that was accepted for publication in Nonlinear Analysis. This experience, in concert with my coursework, landed me a position in the Applied Mathematical Sciences Summer Institute Research Experience for Undergraduates.
As a math and business double major and a CREDO honors student I'm preparing for graduate school and likely a career in education or politics. My classes and research are giving me the edge to be successful, but so are my activities. I'm the current Student Government Association president and have been involved with the service organization Circle K, the business club Phi Beta Lambda, Student Senate, Residence Life and the Academic Enhancement Center as a math tutor. These many roles have given me the chance to face and overcome many challenges, giving me a stronger sense of myself and of my purpose.
I've been helped along by caring professors. Dr. Anderson has taken me under his wing and led me to discover what I enjoy about mathematics. I've worked with him in his role as my adviser, professor and research partner. Math professor Dr. James Forde has also been a great mentor - he took an interest in me even before I was attending Concordia and is so willing to answer any questions I might have.
I chose Concordia because of the access to programs I wanted, research opportunities with professors, diverse viewpoints on campus and the excellent financial aid package - and it just felt right. I also knew that even though I'm from Moorhead, there would be enough happening on campus I would get involved and stay involved. In fact, I often go home less than those who live much further away. Concordia has become my new home.
