Village Counselor Continues World Education At Concordia
By Celine Hein '07
I started working as a junior counselor for the French Language Village, Lac du Bois, in Hackensack, Minn., when I was 17 years old. At that time, I was attending high school in France, and spending the summer with American staff and villagers was quite a cultural shock. But I found it to be an incredibly meaningful experience and I have returned as a staff member every summer since. During the school year, I also worked as a counselor at a few weekend programs at Concordia Language Villages.
My decision to attend Concordia College was very much influenced by my experience at Concordia Language Villages. I also had family in Minnesota, so Concordia seemed the natural choice when I decided to study overseas. I toured the campus once with my father and decided I could see myself going to school here.
I'm pursuing a major in global studies, with minors in communication studies and anthropology. I'm very interested in global issues and cultures, and this major allows me to explore a broad range of disciplines and interests. Outside of the classroom, I serve as co-chair of Concordia Students for Social Justice, and recently, I participated in the Social Justice, Peace and Development semester abroad in India. The trip gave me tremendous insight into what I was to do with my life and how to use my cross-cultural insight in my profession.
