Inspired To Research
By Eric Clapp '08

I originally declared an English education major, but soon decided that wasn't for me. I chose English literature instead, because I loved those classes offered at Concordia, and added religion and psychology minors because those are two areas in which I'm very passionate about learning. They'll also prepare me for work as a youth pastor and eventually seminary to become a pastor.

In all three departments, I've found a great learning environment that allows for peer-to-peer conversation about important topics, during and outside of class. In fact, one of my favorite things about Concordia is class participation and involvement. When a question is posed in class, professors often turn it into a discussion opportunity, gathering the ideas and input of those in the class before they share their own opinions or answers.

In addition to encouraging students to speak out in class, professors are very supportive when it comes to studies and research. One of my most memorable college experiences was when I approached a communication professor, who was teaching one of my classes, with an idea for a study on societal norms. Without even hesitating, she looked at me and asked, "Well, why don't you do it?" And so I did! I researched and conducted surveys on my topic. It's great to be at a school with such an interpersonal outlook on learning.
