Delving into the Sciences
By Dan Bye '07
I’ve always been interested in the sciences, specifically math and physics, which I have chosen for my majors. As I prepare to attend graduate school for engineering, I’m thankful for the valuable research and leadership experience I’m gaining at Concordia.
I have taken courses in a wide variety of subjects, including the molecular neuroscience class. I also researched with Dr. Heidi Manning (link to her Know site), a former NASA scientist, on hypervelocity dust particles. The dust particle accelerator on campus is the only one in the Western Hemisphere and one of only four in the world. And now I’m spending the summer in Seattle learning cutting edge object-oriented computer programming.
All of these opportunities – combined with my involvement in cross country, track, Student Government Association and Student Athlete Advisory Committee – are preparing me for the future by establishing a strong, wide knowledge base that includes the skills necessary to succeed in various environments. The research especially helped me discover the ins and outs of a research laboratory and get a better feel for that segment of the sciences.
Very few of my friends at other schools have had the research or leadership opportunities that were open to me at Concordia. The accessibility of the professors and their willingness to assist students is also unparalleled.
