Continuing A Love Of Math
By Pye Phyo Aung '05

When I entered Concordia I intended to study mathematics and physics in preparation for graduate school in engineering. However, once I took a few classes and found a handful of mentors in the math and science departments I found myself on a different path.

Now I'm at The Johns Hopkins University, where I'm working towards my doctorate in applied mathematics and statistics. I was awarded a graduate assistantship, so my education at Hopkins is free and I hope to gain excellent teaching and research experience at the same time. Once I've attained my degree, I'll look for a job where I can use my expertise in mathematics.

The close, mentoring relationships students can form with their professors is one of Concordia's greatest qualities. My professors helped me with everything from assignments, to research projects and making the most of my academic schedule. I tutored other math students, under the guidance of one of my professors, and at the suggestion of another professor, decided to consider graduate studies in math.

I'm very grateful for having those professors and the effect they had on my future.
