Suggestions by Previous COM 112 Students for Preparing for the Oral Examination:

1. Study with a partner.  (Number 1 by far!)

2. Write out a complete answer.  Create a practice outline from the answer.

3. Think about specific people, places and situations in your examples (your mom, your cousin, a friend from high school, a roommate).  It makes a better story and helps you remember ideas better.

4. Practice out loud.

5. Have your partner role-play the teacher. Have your partner ask questions out of order, or choose different questions each time you meet. Have your partner ask follow-up questions.

6. Concentrate on what you know, rather than on the uniqueness of this type of exam.

7. Visualize the exam situation – the office and the teacher.

8. Study the questions that you think are easy as much as the ones you think are hard.  Some students have commented that they slacked on the easy ones, but then got caught on those.
