The cells in the epidermis of the skin are attached very tightly together at spot junctions (desmosomes). When the cells are fixed and prepared for sectioning, the cell volume shrinks a little but the cell membrane of the adjacent cells remain attached at the desmosomes. This creates a scalloped appearance around the edges of some of the cells. These cells are refered to as prickle cells.
