There are several different slides in these boxes. Look at the lining of the duodenum (box 26). The lumen in lined with a simple columnar epithelium containing goblet cells and microvilli. The microvilli are so dense at the apical end of the cells that is looks like a border on top of the cells. The early microscopists called this a striated border. We now know that it is made of many microvilli and it is sometimes refered to as a microvillous border. The striated border shows much clearer in the slide made from the intestine of Necturus (see figures above).
