Course
Description:
CS 104 is an in-depth introduction to the common applications of the microcomputer. With only minimal assumptions about previous experience you will learn the skills necessary to turn the personal computer into a powerful tool for academic research, document preparation and presentation, and business data processing. The student will learn to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point, and various network applications in a lab setting. CS 104 is very much a hands-on, learn-by-doing type of course.
Textbooks:
· Getting Started with Computing Concepts – Grauer
· Office 2010 – Volume 1
· Excel 2010 – Comprehensive
· MyITlab Software Registration Pack - All four are bundled together at Bookstore with common ISBN#
Each day we will tackle a chapter out of one of the textbooks. Each chapter explains some of the basic concepts and provides a guided tutorial which teaches and practices some of the techniques and skills necessary for that day’s material. There is also an accompanying website (myitlab – see link below) that provides additional review material, quizzes & exams for each chapter. At the end of each chapter is a set of case problems which allow the student to demonstrate their mastery of that chapter’s material in a typical real life situation.
Most days we will:
Read through the chapter assigned.
Work through the guided tutorial
Work through the accompanying myitlab website tutorial
Finish the assigned case problem at the end of the chapter.
Each Thursday we will also normally have a short online quiz covering recent material.
If you have read through the chapter ahead of time,
so you are familiar with the material, you should be able to finish most of the
remaining work during class.
Below is a link to the Course Schedule which describes each daily assignment in
detail. The text and/or the Course Schedule will instruct you regarding the
specifics of what to print off and hand in. Please hand in all the material for
a specific chapter stapled together.
