KERNEL SENTENCES & PHRASE-STRUCTURE TREES

 

1.         Open the computer file with your ten sentences.

 

2.         Under each sentence in its original, type all of the kernel sentences represented in the “surface structure” versions.

            a.         Remember that you will need to make negative statements positive, passive statements active, and compound elements singular. Kernel sentences should not contain any adjectives unless they are in the SC position.

            b.         Stop when you have twenty kernels. For some people, this may be after only one or two sentences in their transformed versions.

 

3.         For five of your kernel sentences, draw phrase-structure trees complete with information about the verb phrases. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.
