Exploration Seminar Fall 2002 - Exploring Anishinaabe Culture

WHAT:    History 315 - Indians of North America and Principia 101 - An Introduction to the Liberal Arts are jointly offering an exploration seminar tilted Exploring Anishinaabe Culture.  The purpose of this seminar is to examine our own lives by experiencing the culture of our Ojibwe (or Chippewa) neighbors.  During fall break from Oct. 17-22, participants will travel to the White Earth Reservation, to meet with tribal leaders, educators and authors.  We will explore how history, environmental perspectives and economic development continue to shape our inter cultural relationships.  While the experience is designed to build on assignments and readings from Dr. Lintelman's History 315 course and Dr. Papenfuss' Principia class, it is open to any Principia section using Last Standing Woman as a text.

WHEN:       We will depart late Thursday afternoon, Oct. 17th, and return Tuesday afternoon on Oct. 22nd

WHERE:
The White Earth Reservation is located in Northwestern Minnesota, approximately 2 hours away from campus.  Lodging will be at the White Earth Re-Discovery Center (Thursday and Friday) and the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (pictured below).  Our tentative itinerary includes visiting the following people and places:

• Attend the MN Council of Church's Elders Spirituality Retreat - featured speaker - Andy Favorite, White Earth band historian
• Winona LaDuke (pictured above), author of Last Standing Woman, Native American activist, and Ralph Nadar's vice-presidential running mate
• White Earth Land Recovery Project Center near Ponsford
• Erma Vizenor, former tribal council member and Native American activist
• Bernice Grandbois, former Native Program Coordinator at Concordia
• Ron Litzau, Concordia alum and teacher at Many Points School

REGISTRATION and COSTS:
Student cost is $150 for 5 days, 5 nights and all meals.  An  $80 deposit will be required to the International Education Office by Sept. 27th to hold your spot.
