My committee work and supervision of student teachers sometimes takes me
off campus during my office hours.
Academic Integrity: Honesty and integrity are important values in this learning community and are expected in this course. Course Description: An overview of the school’s role in the healthy development of youth including: health instruction, health services, school environment, physical education, nutrition and food services, counseling and personal support, school/parent/community partnerships, and school site health promotion.

Attendance: Attendance is expected. Failure to attend class may result in the lowering of your grade and/or an Academic Performance Referral. You are expected to notify the instructor concerning excused absences that you know in advance will occur.

Course Requirements:
1. Sample Advisory Committee Recruitment Letter
10 pts.
You have been given the responsibility of forming an advisory committee
for the target school. Identify at least five individuals as potential
candidates for this committee (see Worksheet #9, p. 110). For each
potential member, list their name, title and/or position, and special insights
or expertise that they would bring to the committee. Type a sample
recruitment letter using the criteria under #6 on p 73 of the text.

2. Health Risk Data Analysis
20 pts.
You are to type a 2-3 page executive summary of the health risks for
this population (elementary K-5, middle 6-9, high 10-12, or college).
After reading Ch. 2 - From Information to Insight in the Kreuter text and
reviewing relevant data sources, you are to answer three questions:
1.) How do mortality, morbidity and behavioral risks for Minnesota,
Clay County or Moorhead differ from national data? 2.)
Which problems seem most relevant to target for this age group and why?
3.) Which problem would you target to have the greatest impact on
the most people? Identifying what you think are the most relevant
concerns will require some analysis on your part and should be verified
with the data you discover. Relevant data sources include:

4. Performance Evaluation of Service Learning Project
20 pts.
You will be assessed on your level of involvement in working with the
Moorhead Junior High Service Learning project. Using input from Jo Larson,
you will be evaluated on several criteria. These criteria will be
shared in class.
5. School Component Resources 30 pts.
Your will become an expert on one component of Comprehensive (Coordinated)
School Health Programs (CSHP) through reading and research. You will
share the results of your research with the class on the assigned date
(see tentative schedule). Your research should culminate in a PowerPoint
presentation in which you will include:
1. A definition of this component
2. What makes for a quality program in this component?
3. What resources (research articles and web sources) would be
important for a school trying to understand this component and/or make
changes to improve this component? Include copies of at least two
important resource articles and descriptions of at least three web resources.
4. A list of 5-10 sample questions for assessing this component
in a k-12 setting.
5. 3-5 ideas for how most schools could work to make this component
more comprehensive or coordinated.
6. Print a handout of your PowerPoint presentation for each member
of the class.
