What is SOAR?
Students Owning and Accepting Responsibility (SOAR) aka Standing On
Absolute Rock, is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing a positive
influence for today's youth. SOAR uses the popular sport of volleyball
as a springboard to illustrate the challenges students face when making
difficult decisions. This fascinating format features Tim Mosser
taking on six of your staff, students, or parents in a volleyball match
- seemingly impossible odds. Students are caught up in the action
and identify with the challenge. Following the 6 on 1, Tim continues
his message with a parallel challenge of making responsible decisions.
His energetic and enthusiastic style captures students’ attention and leaves
them feeling empowered to own and accept responsibility. SOAR can
also provide a wide range of motivational messages and music to target
various audiences.
What is 6 on 1 volleyball?
Tim Mosser will take on six players in a volleyball game. All
court boundaries are the same as in a regular volleyball game. The
only difference is that Tim is allowed three contacts on his side of the
net. It is a fun and exciting way to get people involved.
Why 6 on 1 volleyball?
Just as young people find it hard to believe that one person can defeat
six, they also find it hard to believe that they can remain chemical-free,
make consistently responsible choices, and achieve almost any goal on which
they set their minds. The six on one volleyball demonstration gives
them a visual link to this concept.
Who is Tim Mosser?
Tim is a math instructor and head volleyball coach at Concordia College
in Moorhead, MN. He is a certified instructor for On Campus Talking
About Alcohol, a program developed by the Prevention Research Institute
addressing alcohol and drug use for junior high, high school and college
students. Tim received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in
math, physical education and coaching from North Dakota State University.
He has coached volleyball at the high school and college levels since 1987.
What Groups Can SOAR Address?
SOAR can provide presentations for school assemblies, youth group gatherings,
camps, conventions and rallies of all kinds.
School Assemblies
Jr. and Sr. High Schools
The assembly begins with Tim challenging your students and staff to
a volleyball game - 6 against 1. After the volleyball game, Tim continues
his presentation with a challenge to make responsible choices such as remaining
chemical free. His positive, enthusiastic style leaves students with
a message they won’t forget!
Elementary Schools
The assembly begins with a 6 on 1 volleyball game and is followed by
a frank but appropriate discussion of alcohol and other drugs. This
discussion s interactive with lots of student participation. Then
the students take part in a musical activity that leaves them singing a
chemical-free message.
SOAR Spiritually
Soar is actively involved in youth ministry. Because not everyone
is "tuned in to the same station", SOAR reaches out to youth in a variety
of ways. Team SOAR can provide three very important elements for youth
groups, college organizations, summer camps, rallies or conventions.
1. Spiritual Messages and Activities
A wide range of spiritual and motivational messages are available
through SOAR presentations. Some popular topics include "Walking the Talk",
"I’m Waiting for Marriage", "How to be an Athlete and a Christian", and
"Witnessing Through Your Gifts" . SOAR will also present a message
of your choice to target a particular group .
2. Volleyball
A variety of formats are available. You can have a 6 on 1 challenge,
recreational play, tournaments, clinics or a combination of these.
Whatever you desire in the way of volleyball, SOAR can provide for you.
3. Music
Music is a powerful tool for bringing messages home to youth.
Team SOAR brings the Word alive with a variety of popular and original
Christian songs. Consider SOAR for youth groups, college organizations,
camps, rallies, conventions or whatever you can come up with!!! Possibilities
include:
· school assemblies ·FCA ·YFC

Are You Just a Jock is an example of an orginal SOAR song that is used with the talk "How to be an Athlete and a Christian". The mixture of athletics, motivational messages and music has a powerful impact on youth. Listen Here to a portion of "Are you Just a Jock?" on Real Audio.
How long is the presentation?
SOAR can easily customize the length and content of the presentation
to meet your needs. A typical presentation is approximately 50-60
minutes, with the 6 on 1 volleyball lasting 25-30 minutes and the motivational
message 25-30 minutes.

What people are saying about SOAR
"I do have to tell you that when I learned we were having ‘another
presentation on saying NO to drugs’, I wasn’t too excited…NOT SO in your
case!!! This is my twenty-first year of teaching and I can honestly
say that your presentation was THE BEST that I have ever seen!!"
B.P.
"Fantastic! A great activity which really got the kids’ attention and presented tremendous skills followed by a super presentation that the students connected with, understood and responded to!" B.K.
"What a talent! Thanks for the great communication job of caring & concern even when ‘beating the sox’ off the senior high boys!"
"I can assure you that your S.O.A.R. presentation DID have an extremely positive and very lasting impact on not only our students, but faculty as well." W.S.
"It was refreshing to have someone talk about alcohol and other drugs who has never had a problem with them." T.N.
"Your athletic ability made an impression and gave you instant credibility with the kids. The sports connection is a win-win situation with the teens." D.B.
"Tim does a super job of gaining the students’ attention and talking ‘with’ them, not ‘to’ them. They really enjoyed him." B.K.
"I liked the pure energy and talent that Tim showed as well as his positive interaction with the kids. Tim did a super job of ‘connecting’ with the kids from the start and used stories to effectively stress each important point." P.R.
"The musical composition created by Mr. Mosser and our students (K-4) was a great way to convey his message." S.J.
" Tim uses the volleyball experience to address character issues such as self-discipline and personal responsibility. As it takes vision, planning, discipline and training to compete successfully ‘6 - on - 1’, is takes that same preparation to develop the tools and the means to compete successfully in life’s choices. He is a man of integrity and a man of many talents." W.H.
"It was pertinent and was an excellent springboard for discussion.
Very good." D.V.
