Training and Workshops

  • Faculty Mentoring Seminar, Dovre Center for Faith and Learning, Concordia College, Fall 2007-Spring 2008

Newer faculty and administrative staff are invited to explore connections between faith and learning within their own work at the college.  Following a two-day workshop in August, the group meets on a monthly basis throughout the year, developing individual projects based in their own disciplines; these projects are presented in a final one-day workshop.

  • Faculty Spiritual Heritage Travel Seminar, Dovre Center for Faith and Learning, Concordia College, Fall 2007-Spring 2008

Faculty and administrative staff are invited to explore the spiritual heritage of the college.  The group meets on a monthly basis throughout the year, discussing readings about the history of the Lutheran church and personal experiences.  The seminar concludes with an 11 day trip to Germany to visit many of the historic sites of Martin Luther and the Reformation.

  • Advising for Vocation Workshop, Concordia College, Summer 2007

This is a workshop held over two days to engage advisers in the process of advising for vocation at Concordia College.

  • Project NExT: New Experiences in Teaching, American Mathematical Society/Mathematical Association of America, Fall 2006-Fall 2007.

Project NExT is a professional development program for recent Ph.D.s.  It provides a network of mathematicians teaching at the college level.  Attendance is required at one workshop and three professional conferences at which issues facing new faculty members are addressed.

  • New Advisor Workshop, Concordia College, Summer 2006

This is a workshop held in two half-day sessions to inform new advisers of the advising process at Concordia College.

  • Talk About Learning Workshop, Concordia College, Summer 2006

This is a two day workshop to discuss assessment at the college and within the department.

  • New Faculty Orientation, Concordia College, Fall 2005

This is a two day orientation designed to introduce new faculty to the classroom and Concordia College.  Presentations included the mission of the college, goals of the liberal arts, curriculum, student support and promotion and tenure to name a few.  The information was both general teaching knowledge and information specific to Concordia College.

  • Preparing Future Faculty, Iowa State University, Spring 2003 – Summer 2004

The PFF program supplements the departmental graduate preparation by offering new teaching, mentoring, and learning possibilities, which give postdoctoral fellows and graduate students further credentialing for a competitive job market.  The goal of PFF is to better prepare graduates for faculty careers through a combination of seminars, mentoring, and practical classroom and departmental service experiences.

  • College Teaching Seminar, Iowa State University, Fall 1999

This is a two day seminar designed to introduce new teaching assistants and faculty to the classroom and Iowa State University.  Several presentations and discussions were available on various topics ranging from technology in the classroom to how to deal with problem students.  The information was both general teaching knowledge and information specific to Iowa State University.
