Criteria for Final Paper in 331
-Paper should treat its topic thoroughly and as completely
as possible given the page range.
-Paper should be “thesis-driven.” That is, it should
have a clearly stated direction and all materials should be used to support
that direction. Simple reporting should be at a minimum.
-Paper should be well-documented in either APA or MLA
styles. Double-spaced, “references” or “works cited” page at the
end. No cover page necessary, but I would like the paper to have a title.
If you want to subdivide into “works cited” and “works consulted,” please
do so.
-Paper should have a discernible and systematic “method.”
This could be an existing method or one of your own creation.
-Paper should feature an analysis of its subject matter
that is well connected to the media. That is, media concerns should
be clearly at the center of the paper.
-Paper should address “larger” questions regarding the
media and society/culture, as well as detailing the topic itself.
-Paper should be polished and carefully proof-read.
-Paper may be divided into sections with headings.
This is not required, but may be useful.
-Organization is an important key in a longer paper.
Please pay attention to sections, order of ideas, transitions, etc.
-Source materials can come from primary or secondary
sources. Source range is usually around 5-12 sources for a paper
this scope, but that may depend a lot on the topic.
-Direct quotes should be used when necessary, but
not overused. All claims should be supported with either primary
or secondary material.
