Assignment #2: Media Myth Outline/Bibliography and Presentation

Your second assignment for the semester is a linked assignment with your IOC 100 class (Presentational Aid Speech).   Each of the first eleven media myths will be covered by two students in class, so some coordination of planning and effort will be necessary in order to create the most effective presentations.

This assignment has three parts: (1) Presentation; (2) Chapter Outline; (3) Bibliography

Presentation Guidelines

In consultation with the other person who is assigned the same myth that you are assigned, you should decide who will present the Myth (Choice A) and who will present the Prescription (Choice B).  Presentations will take place October 30 through November 8 (as assigned on syllabus).

Specifics of the speech requirement of the assignment will be discussed by your IOC 100 instructor.  Guidelines for the content required for this assignment,which will be graded as part of this (INQ 100) class, are described below:
 
Choice A - Myth
  • Explain the myth
  • Give statistics for: belief in the myth for Galician's classes (this information is contained in each of the myth chapters)
  • Summarize pertinent information presented in the textbook chapter, focusing on "Additional Research & Commentary Related to this Mass Media Myth" (however, some important information related to the myth may be found in other parts of the chapter)
  • Present additional research that you have done (e.g., prevalence of belief in this myth, scientific and/or theoretical support for some feature(s) of this myth, etc.)
  • Use a media example as a presentational aid
Choice B - Prescription
  • Explain Galician's prescription for the myth
  • Give the statistics for belief in this myth for: students at Concordia, according to the survey we collected
  • Summarize pertinent information presented in the textbook chapter, focusing on "Dis-Illusioning This Myth" (however, some important information related to the prescription may be found in other parts of the chapter)
  • Present additional research that you have done (e.g., published research that shows how belief in the myth is harmful, better or more realistic/healthier approaches to relationships in comparison to the behaviors perpetuated by the myth, etc.)
  • Use a media example as a presentational aid

Chapter Outline & Bibliography

The other part of this assignment will help you prepare for the presentation, but also allow you to practice and demonstrate some additional skills.  For the written part of this assignment, you are asked to outline the entire chapter in your Galician textbook that corresponds with your media myth, and to collect and document additional research that will be helpful for your presentation by preparing a brief, annotated list of references.  Links to more details are given below:
