"I love SPSS"
1. Statement of purpose? What is this project going to tell us? Why is it important? (1 pg) |
Email this to Aileen by next class period (Sept. 30) |
2. What is/are your Hs/RQs? Why do you expect things to happen this way? Give me the logical framework for the Qs that you pose. Start building the literature review that backs up your Hs/RQs. |
Have Hs/RQs ready for next week (Sept. 30; e-mail them if you have time). Work on the logical framework--give Aileen [copies of] what you have by classtime. Continue to collect articles/books, etc. |
3. Describe your data for me:• How many Ss do you have? M/Fs? Any other demographic info?• What kind of measures were used? What variables do they represent? # of items/variable? |
Start recording this information in your notes so it can be included in your method section. |
4. How are you going to analyze your data to address your Hs/RQs?• Report reliabilities• What comparisons, means, etc. do you have to calculate? |
Bring a list of everything you need to calculate to class (Oct. 7) |
5. Preliminary literature review, including your hypotheses and research questions (probably will be 3-5 pages)• Keep collecting articles, books, etc., to fill in gaps in information. |
E-mail this to Aileen by next class period (Oct. 7). |
6. If you haven't completed Steps #3 and #4, work on this in class. |
Bring a list of everything you need to calculate to class. Time will be provided in class to work on SPSS calculations needed to complete your paper. |
7. Preliminary methods and results section• Method section should include (a) description of sample, (b) procedure used (talk to Aileen if you are not sure how the data was collected), (c) description of measures, including calculated reliabilities for each. (1-2 pages)• Results section should address each H/RQ separately. Don't forget to calculate and report averages, as well as the individual statistical tests necessary to answer your questions. (1-3 pages)• SAVE ALL YOUR SPSS CALCULATIONS!! (in case you or I have to go back to fill in a missing number) |
E-mail this to Aileen by next class period (Oct. 14). |
8. Preliminary Discussion section (2-4 pages)• Brief summary of results in layperson's terms.• What is the meaning/importance/implications of your findings?• Incorporate other researchers' findings as appropriate.• Strengths and weaknesses of the research?• Where can/should research go from here? |
Work on this for inclusion in final paper. Float questions to Aileen if you need or want to. |
9. Complete final draft of paper (probably 8-15 pages, but then again, maybe not)• Clean up the sections of the paper that you wrote before.• Pull it all together into a coherent paper, with headings/subheadings as necessary.• Use APA style (title page, in-text references, reference page, formatting of paper, etc.) |
E-mail this to Aileen during the week after Fall Break (by Friday, Oct. 24). |
