COM 201 Small Assignment #3: Synthesis References

For Paper #2 you will need to locate several articles that relate to one another on a communication topic of your choice. For this small assignment, you will need to do the following:

Develop a purpose statement that describes why you are personally interested in the topic you have chosen
Collect a list of references for your next paper, using correct APA citation style to format this list.
Turn this assignment into Aileen before you leave for Fall Break (October 19)
ALSO, schedule a meeting time to talk about your synthesis paper with Aileen after the break (sign-up sheet will be posted on my office door before break)

EXAMPLE

Suppose you liked to watch television sitcoms. You might locate these four different articles and write a purpose statement, like this:

Purpose Statement:
Ever since I was little, most of my favorite television shows have been sitcoms. However, I have sometimes wondered whether the messages we get from watching sitcoms might have a negative impact on our views about real relationships. Part of this might be because sitcoms are funny, so people do not think that something humorous could have serious effects, or that they might "learn" anything from them. Therefore, I would like to see if research suggests that humor does affect people's learning, and what kind of things we might learn from television sitcoms.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

You may, but do not have to, use the article you found for Paper #1 for this assignment too.
You may, but are not required to, use one of the theories from the West and Turner textbook to focus your paper.
You should limit your search to JOURNAL ARTICLES ONLY on the databases whenever you can. Almost all of the databases you will use for COM 201 have this ability. This way you will be less likely to inadvertently choose the wrong kind of article.
You may list more than 4 articles if you are not sure which articles you will use for your next paper (it actually is a good idea to locate more than the minimum!)
