COM 109 Speech Self-Critique Guidelines

1. Watch your video AT LEAST 3 times.

2. Each time you watch and/or listen to the video, take notes regarding the following:

3. In a 1-2 page thoughtfully written essay, tell me what you think you did well in your speech, and what you think you could have done better (based on the notes you took on the above points).  If you could do your speech over again, what would you do differently?  List some things that you can/will try to do in your next speech to improve as a public speaker.

Your paper should be organized in three sections (with headings for each section), similar to the example below:

Self-Critique for Speech #1 (or #2, as appropriate)

Things I did well

Give me a gold star...

Things I could better

I didn't realize that I drooled...

Things I will do to improve in my next speech

I will start my research earlier so that I can find the better support...

4.  Turn in your paper and your videotape by the day of the next workshop (but you can turn it in before).

You will be graded on your level of thoughtfulness and insight in each of the three sections of this paper.  Be descriptive.  If you didn’t have good eye contact, what did you do?  (“I spent most of my time reading my cards.”)  Provide concrete examples of what you did and what you will do for your next speech.
