COM 109 Audience Analysis Assignment
1. Complete the audience analysis activity sheet
for your speech topic in class, and turn it in with your analysis below.
For each activity, you will have the opportunity to "test" 2 different
ideas that interest you as speech topics.
-
For Speech #2, we will complete an "Audience Analysis Checklist."
-
For Speech #3, we will complete a "Persuasive Poll."
2. Based on what you learn in your analysis activity, tell me how you will
adapt
your speech to the audience. Make a final decision about your
topic choice, and write a short paper telling
me:
[one paragraph for each point below, for a total of 3 paragraphs]
-
How will the demographic information about your audience
influence your speech?
-
Based on your predictions, how will the audience's knowledge
of, and attitude towards, your topic influence your approach?
-
How can you motivate your audience to listen (e.g., to which
of Maslow's needs will you appeal, and why)?
3. Turn in your paper and the activity
sheet with your speech.
Your audience analysis paper and activity sheet must be included in your
folder on your speech day. This paper will receive a three level
mark: good (+), satisfactory (check), or unsatisfactory (-), and will impact
your total grade for the speech.
-
A good paper shows insight and reflection on your audience’s needs,
and clearly ties the three sections of the paper together, showing how
they relate to each other.
-
A satisfactory paper meets the basic expectations of the assignment,
addressing all three sections of the assignment, but is not insightful
or fails to effectively show connections between the sections (how one
section clearly or logically leads to the next).
-
An unsatisfactory paper fails to address one or more of the three
sections of the paper.
