5/9 Delos
Today was dominated by a trip to Delos, another Greek island about a 45 minute ferry ride away. We left about 10:30 a.m., after taking a cute group shot on the pier and arrived on the island a little after 11. We had a very verbose tour guide who suffered from a little cough. He showed us many of the high points of this rather small, uninhabited island. Delos’ golden age was a few millennia ago (700-500 BC), so for much of the tour, we had to imagine what it would have been like, had all the ruins been in their original state. According to legend, Delos was the birthplace of the god Apollo, so there were many temples to and statues of him. There were ruins of houses and mosaics, as well as a small museum housing more statuesque sculptures. At the very end of our time there, a few of our guys raced up the tallest hill on the island and then rushed back down to catch the ferry. Our stalwart professor led the pack and beat them all back. We arrived back on Mykonos mid-afternoon in time for lunch and ice cream.
