Consider joining us on our 2009 May seminar, Mathematics in
Another Light, one of Concordia College Moorhead's longest-running (since 1976!) and most successful overseas
seminars. In this course we will examine the history and development of
mathematics, and its subsequent influence on Western culture. Major
highlights include our visits to the pyramids and temples in Egypt, the
ancient sites of classical Greece, Rome, Florence, the Alps, Paris, London, and
Stonehenge on the Salisbury plain.
International Experience
- 2008, Bulgaria:
In August I will give an invited talk at the 5th International Conference of Applied Mathematics and Computing in Plovdiv.
- 2007, Math May Seminar:
Eighteen of us, 9 women and 9 men, participated in an unforgetable math history adventure! A sleepless week in Egypt, the relaxing atmosphere of Greece, the
history and art of Italy, the Alps in Switzerland, and the great cities Paris and London.
- 2006, Concordia Heritage Tour:
For three weeks in May, 24 Concordia faculty members participated in a college heritage tour to Europe. We vistied many Luther sites in eastern Germany, and then continued on to Copenhagen, Denmark, Lund, Sweden, and and several cities in Norway.
- 2005, Turkey:
In June I gave a talk at the First International Workshop on Dynamic Equations on Time Scales, which
was held at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.
- 2005, Math May Seminar:
Twelve women and four men survived a sleepless week in Egypt, the relaxing atmosphere of Greece, the
history and art of Italy, the Alps in Switzerland, and the great cities Paris and London.
- 2003, Math May Seminar:
Nineteen students and I traveled from May 6 to June 3. We spent two weeks in Greece,
then continued on to Rome, Florence, Switzerland, Paris, and London.
- 2001, Math May Seminar:
Twelve students and I went, May 8 ~ June 5. After a brief
stopover in Amsterdam, we spent 6 days touring Egypt, from Cairo
to Aswan. After a week in Greece, we went to Rome, Florence, and
the Italian Alps near Susa. Next we had 3 days in Paris, and
ended in London.
- 2000, Sicily:
In July I gave a talk at the World Congress of Nonlinear Analysts, which
was held in Catania. I managed to take two day trips, to Mt.
Etna and to Siracusa, the home of Archimedes.
- 2000, Math May Seminar:
Twenty-five students and I filled thirty straight days of
learning and adventure, from Cairo to London.
- 1999, South Korea:
A return trip for me to Seoul, with some hiking in the eastern
mountains, and a brief trip to Pusan.
- 1998, Math May Seminar:
Sixteen of us started in London, then proceeded
to Turkey for a few days in Istanbul. The trip continued to Greece,
Italy, and finally Chur in Switzerland. We flew home from
Zurich.
- 1993, Far East:
Backpacking for five weeks in South Korea, Hong Kong, and
the People's Republic of China.
- 1990-1993, Japan:
I studied Japanese in Tokyo for six months before moving to Nagoya
