May 11, 2009: Athens

We arrived in Athens at 2:30 PM. We had some difficulty getting to the hotel using public transportation, since the metro train from the airport was closed, but we eventually got there by express bus and the city subway. Our first stop of the day was the Acropolis after a long hike. The view of Athens was beautiful and the Parthenon was amazing. We did a lot more walking to see the Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. We tried to find the Acropolis Museum but we had some trouble with the map; it turns out the museum is still under construction and not open to the public yet anyway. We didn’t make it before it closed, so we went to our family style Greek restaurant, the Scholarhio Ouzeri Kouklis. They brought us a lot of food which we couldn’t quite finish. Most of us enjoyed the kalamari and the meatballs. After dinner we headed back to the hotel where some of us went up to the roof garden to see a beautiful view of the Parthenon and the city at night.
