09 05 Athens

May 9th We arrive in Athens around 6 am. After leaving the airport, we take about a half an hour bus ride to our hotel (Hotel Parthenon) so we can drop off our luggage. Right after this we take off on a walk to eat breakfast at an authentic Greek restaurant (McDonalds!!). We then proceed to hike up Lykavittos Hill. From here we can overlook all of Athens. It is a very beautiful view. We then hiked to a museum to check out the cycladic art from the Greek Islands. After this we made a long trek to the National Archaeological Museum. This museum is very large, and holds a lot of pieces from Greek history. We were able to take some pictures from inside. When we left this museum, we made our way back to the hotel for supper. We then had free time for the rest of the night. Some of us explored Athens, but most of us washed clothes and caught up on sleep since we didn't get any the night before.

To start the morning we take a little walk through Athens to Lykavittos Hill, which affords us a nice view of the Acropolis.

Atop Lykavittos Hill is the little chapel, Agios Giorgios.

Megan and Sarah atop Lykavittos Hill, with Athens below.

Coming down from the hill, we stopped in at the nearby Cycladic Museum. A representative item from the collection is shown here.

Next we headed over to the National Archaeological Museum, seen here on our approach.

One of the golden masks unearthed by Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae, which he thought was Agamemnon's death mask.

Head of the statue dedicated to Athena Nike.

The celebrated horse and jockey of Artemision.

Another stunning bronze statue, the youth from Antikythera.

Poseidon (or Zeus?) of Artemision.

We obtained a friend thanks to Aaron, Agamemnon the Dog.

After leaving the museum: Angie, Lindsay, Sarah, and Megan.
