Match Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- With three matches to go in Concordia's dual match against Jamestown on Tuesday, the two teams were tied and it looked like the team victory would go all the way to the wire.

Things looked even better for the Cobbers as they battled the 14th-ranked Jimmies in the third-to-last match at 184. It appeared that Concordia freshman Tony Neumann was about to take senior Joe Vincent to the mat and take a commanding lead in their match. Faster than you can say "what in the name of Dan Gable is going on," Neumann was on his back and Vincent was finishing off a pin that swung the 14-14 tie to a 20-14 advantage for Jamestown.

Concordia's Ed Oehlers ground out a 6-4 decision at 197 before Jamestown heavyweight Sam Sand sent the crowd on their way with a pin of his own at 1:52 against Jordan Hepp.

The match started out in major fashion. After the Jimmies were awarded a forfeit victory at 125, four of the next five matches were won by major decisions. Shane Hase of Jamestown won a 13-2 match over Smokey McBride.

One of the most promising young wrestlers in Clay Nagel's stable then returned the favor. John Fradette took control of his match at 141 in the early part of the first period and cruised to a 15-4 major decision. The victory is Fradette's team-leading 23rd of the year. He is now 23-10 in his first season in maroon and gold.

P.J. Mack followed with the biggest surprise of the match. Another Cobber freshman, Mack entered the match at 149 having lost his two outings at the Elmhurst Invitational and having to face Jamestown's Jake Esser who came into the match ranked third in the North Region in the NAIA. Mack played the match close to the vest and took control in the third period with a pair of takedowns on his way to an 8-5 decision.

James Meland stepped on the mat and gave the Jimmies a 14-7 lead when he walked his way to a 16-4 major decision over Cody Salo.

Meland's victory set the stage for a Cobber comeback as they won the next two matches. Lee Rahrlien wore down Keenen Funk at 165 and claimed a 14-4 major decision. Rahrlien is now 22-7 on the year and has won 85 matches in his career. That places him 10th on the Concordia all-time list of career victories.

Luke Vetsch scored an impressive 5-2 win over Clyde Switzer after it looked like Switzer would be able to win going away in the first period. Vetsch's victory tied the team score at 14-14 and set the stage for Jamestown turnaround.

In the end, both teams won five individual matches on the night. The loss evens Concordia's dual meet record at 4-4 on the year. Jamestown moves ahead of the .500 mark in dual matches for the season. They are now

5-4-1 on the year.

Concordia will finish off their home schedule in 2005-06 when they host Northern State in a dual meet on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7:00pm.
