MOORHEAD, Minn.--
The new-look Concordia wrestling team opened the 2005-06 season by falling 40-3 to cross-town rival MSU Moorhead on Wednesday in a dual meet held at Alex Nemzek Hall on the campus of MSU Moorhead.

The meet was the collegiate wrestling debut for Cobber head coach Clay Nagel. Nagel served as the co-head coach last season and in his first full year as head coach. Nagel had to pleased with the grittiness of the Cobbers as they battled the 11th-ranked team in NCAA Division II from start to finish.

Last year Concordia lost 38-3 and lost by a pin, technical fall or major decision in five mathces. This year, despite losing by a fall in four matches, the Cobbers lost four matches by less than three points - with two being decided by a single point.

Lee Rahrlien picked up the lone Concordia win of the meet. He picked up where he left off last season by scoring a 6-4 win over Tyler Tubbs at 157. Last year he led the Cobbers in wins with 32. That total ranked put him in a tie for fourth on the all-time Concordia list for wins in a season.

Junior Smokey McBride and freshman John Fradette were the two Cobbers that lost by a single point. McBride was beat 7-6 at 133 and Fradette dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in his first match of his collegiate career.

Another pair of freshmen gave Nagel something to be excited about. P.J. Mack and Luke Vetsch both put on good matches in their first collegiate action. Mack lost 3-1 to Peter Hayes at 149 and Vetsch was on the short end of a 5-3 decision to Skip Toops at 174.

Concordia will keep looking to improve when they compete at the Bison Open on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 9:00pm at NDSU.
