Match Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Concordia tuned up for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet by cruising past Itasca Community College 41-6. The Cobbers won nine of the 10 individual matches en route to scoring their most points in a dual match for the entire season.

The Cobbers finished their 2005-06 regular season by evening their dual match record at 5-5. The five dual match wins represents the most in a single season since the 2003-04 campaign.

Against Itasca, Concordia scored two wins by a fall and also had two more by major decision. The Cobbers also claimed two victories by forfeit due to open weight classes.

The two biggest wins of the night for Clay Nagel's crew came from Ed Oehlers and John Fradette. Oehlers beat Chris Thoreson at 197 by using a two-minute riding time advantage to pickup a point and win 3-2. Thoreson entered the match ranked fourth in the National Junior College poll.

Fradette, who continues to get stronger and stronger as he comes to the end of his freshman season, pinned Cody Johnvin in the third period after leading 10-2 at the time. Like Thoreson, Johnvin was ranked #4 in the latest NJCAA poll. The victory improves Fradette's season record to 25-10. His 25 victories is the most among Cobber wrestlers this season.

Besides Oehlers and Fradette, Leland Brincefield, Cody Salo, Lee Rahrlien, Luke Vetsch and Tony Neumann also scored wins.

Brincefield set the tone for the match by opening with an impressive pin just :57 into his match with Kory Tibbetts.

Salo scored a takedown in overtime to post his third win of the season.

Rahrlien continued his march towards the top of the all-time Cobber victory list. He dismantled Aaron Young 12-2 in a major decision to win his 24th match of the year and 87th of his career. He is 10th on the list of all-time career victories at Concordia and needs one more win to jump into a tie for eighth place and four more to crack into the top seven.

Next up for the Cobbers is the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional meet on Feb. 18 at the University of Chicago.
