Meet Recap:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (3/6/09)-- It took 36 matches and the No.1-ranked wrestler in the nation to finally beat Cobber sophomore Phil Moenkedick. Moenkedick lost 15-1 to Michael Wilcox of Delaware Valley in the NCAA tile match in the 184-lb weight class in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday. The loss is the first of the year for Moenkedick who ends his season with a 35-1 overall record.

Moenkedick becomes the first Concordia runner-up at the NCAA National Meet since 1983 when Cobber Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Molly McLeod placed second. Moenkedick earns All-American honors for the first time in his career and becomes the 12th Concordia NCAA All-American.

Wilcox lost in the NCAA title match last year at 184. He came back to finish his senior season by going 37-2.

Moenkedick got caught on a takedown attempt in the first period and Wilcox countered by putting Moenkedick on his back. The two-point near pin along with two takedowns in the period put Wilcox up 6-0 after the first period.

Wilcox scored the only point of the second period after he escaped from the down position to start the period.

In the third period Moenkedick was forced to be aggressive and go after points. Wilcox caught Moenkedick again and was able to put him on his back to seal the victory.

In Moenkedick's first match of the day he dominated Ben Engelland of UW-Stevens Point and claimed an 8-0 win the national semifinals.

FRIDAY RECAP

Concordia sophomore Phil Moenkedick advanced to the semifinals of the 184-lb weight class at the NCAA National Meet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Moenkedick claimed a pair of decisions on the first day of the meet to position himself for a possible national championshipo match and also All-American status. All-American Tony Neumann went 1-2 at 197 which ended his bid to repaeat as an All-American.

Moenkedick, who was seeded third heading into the first match, started the meet by claiming a 6-0 decision over Seth Rehn of Coe. He then went on to beat No.6-seeded Bryan Lenhardt of Johnson and Wales 8-7.

Moenkedick will now face Ben Engelland of UW-Stevens Point who was seeded seventh heading into the meet. Moenkedick will try and become the first national champion for the Cobbers since Barry Bennett pulled off the feat in 1978.

Neumann was upset in the first round by Corbin Semple of Waynesburg. Neumann fell 7-2 in the opening match which put him into the scramble of having to compete through the wrestlebacks. He then went on to post a 7-1 decision over Brian Scher of Hunter in the first round of wrestlebacks. Unfortunately his bid to repeat as an All-American was derailed in the next round when he lost to No.7-seeded Rob Kramer of Coe.
