Cobber Day 1 Results (word)
Meet Recap
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (1/10/09)--The day started out on a tough note for Concordia but then finished with a bang as the Cobbers won three straight matches at the prestigious NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Tournament to earn a spot in the fifth-place match.
Concordia dropped the opening match of the tournament to No.4-ranked Coe 25-12 but then produced wins over No.26-ranke Dubuque, No.9-ranked St. John's and No.14-ranked Olivet. The three wins helps Concordia push their dual-meet record to 5-1 on the season.
Against Coe, the Cobbers fell victim to major-decision disease. CC won four matches but lost four matches by a major decision. Ben Anderson, Justin Berns, Lane Lunde and Phil Moenkedick all won matches against Coe.
Moenkedick would go on to win all four of his matches on the day and is now 15-0 on the year.
After their loss to Coe, the Cobbers beat Dubuque 25-18 by winning all three of the last individual matches. Moenkedick started the run by winning 12-3 at 184. All-American Tony Neumann then pinned his opponent at 197 and then Nick Nadeau came up with one of the biggest wins of the day as he recorded a 10-8 decision over an opponent that had 19 wins on the year.
Concordia then beat region rival St. John's 22-14 in their third match of the day. The Johnnies entered the match ranked ninth in the nation and had beaten perennial national wrestling power Augsburg in a dual meet earlier in the year. Against the Johnnies, CC won four of the first five matches to take control of the match. Ross Dankers and Moenkedick would seal the victory by earning wins at 174 and 184.
The Cobbers finished the day by beating #14 Olivet 21-16 in the closest match of the day. CC won six of the 10 matches against Olivet.
Concordia will face Cornell in the fifth-place match on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
