Meet Recap:

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/08/07)-- Another multiple team invitational, another successful Saturday for the Cobbers. Concordia traveled south to St. Cloud and posted a total of 50 individual match victories at the Husky Open. CC brought 21 wrestlers to the meet and 19 posted at least one victory with 10 recording at least three wins on the day.

Clay Nagel's crew had four wrestlers finish in the top five in their weight classes. CC was led by freshman Phil Moenkedick who went 5-1 and finished in third place at 174. He also won the Most Falls award for the meet as he pinned three opponents.

Moenkedick opened the meet with three straight wins. He pinned his first two foes and then captured a 5-2 decision over Ryan Woods from Division II nationally-ranked UW-Parkside. Woods came into the invite with a 14-5 record. After his victory over Woods, Moenkedick had won 15 straight matches. That streak came to an end when he lost in the final minute against Kaleb Young, a redshirt freshman at the University of Minnesota. Young entered the day with a 6-4 record against DI opponents. Moenkedick then went on to pin Greg Frank from Southwest Minnesota State in :50 seconds. Frank was 12-5 on the season and was the top wrestler for the DII Mustangs. Moenkedick then finished off the day by posting a 5-2 Cory VanGroll from #19 UW-Parkside. Moenkedick is now 17-2 on the season.

Sophomore Tanner Jorud matched Moenkedick's five wins at the meet. Jorud was 5-1 in the 184-lb weight class and finished fifth. After losing his first match, he rattled off four straight victories in the wrestlebacks.

Justin Berns continued his early-season success in his first season of college wrestling. Berns, who was held out of the MSU Moorhead dual meet on a trainer's decision, went 4-2 at the Husky Open and finished fourth at 149. He opened the day by beating University of Minnesota freshman Jared Rickert 5-1. He then lost his second round match 7-6 to Willy Mekeel from MSU Mankato. The Mavericks are currently ranked second in the nation in DII. After losing to Mekeel, Berns won three straight matches in the wrestlebacks before losing 4-2 to Mekeel in the third-place match.

The other Cobber top five finisher was Tony Neumann who captured fourth place at 197. Neumann won his first two matches in the championship before losing 5-3 to former DII All-American Jeremy Lang. He then beat Gordon Bierschenk of the University of Minnesota 4-3 in the wrestlebacks before falling in the final seconds of the third-place match to Josh Holforty from UW-Eau Claire. Holforty won the 197-lb weight class at the Augsburg Open earlier in the year.

Concordia will compete in the Terry Haws Dual Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 15 at St. John's beginning at 10 a.m.
