ELMHURST, Ill. (2/17/06)-- Concordia placed only one wrestler in the top five in a weight class and stumbled to a 13th place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet held at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. on Saturday.

It wasn't the finish to the season that Concordia was looking for but in the end, the Cobbers will be able to look back on a year that put them on the regional and national wrestling scene.

CC freshman Lane Lunde capped off his first collegiate campaign by going 4-2 and finishing in fifth place at 165. He was the only Cobber wrestler to record more than two wins at the meet. Lunde started his first regional by gaining a 3-0 decision over Joe Lofboom from St. John's. Lunde then lost to Mike Kerr of Augustana 8-4 in the quarterfinal round. Lunde then won a pair of decisions to get into the wrestleback semifinals. In that round, he lost to second-seeded Phil Kruzel of the University of Chicago 10-3. In the fifth-place match, Lunde beat #6 Tony Doan of Elmhurst 3-1. Lunde finishes his season with a 27-12 record. He ties Joe Leacox for the most wins on the season.

Leacox was one of five Cobber wrestlers that went 2-2 at the regional meet. Leacox was upset in the first round but then came back to win two straight matches in the wrestleback round before falling to Ben Hart of the University of Chicago in the wrestleback quarterfinals. Leacox matches Lunde's 25 wins and posts a 25-21 record for the year.

One of the best surprises at the meet came from heavyweight Preston Lyles who also went 2-2 and recorded one of the Cobbers' four falls in the meet. Lyles upset seventh-ranked August Lambers of St. Olaf 5-3. He then lost to #2 Jaran Rutledge of Knox 8-0. Rutledge went on to win the heavyweight dvision. Lyles then pinned Mike Weir of Pacific before losing in the wrestleback quarterfinals.

Brandon Bartyzal, Logan Lunde and Cody Salo were the other two Cobber wrestlers that went 2-2 on the day. Bartyzal, who entered the meet ranked fourth at 149, won his first match by a fall but then lost to #5 Joey Massman 3-1 in the championship quarterfinals. He then won a tight 1-0 decision in the fourth round of the wrestlebacks. In the wrestleback quarterfinals, Bartyzal fell 12-6 to Joe McHale of Wheaton (Ill.).

Both Logan Lunde and Salo had similar meet itineraries as Bartyzal. They both won their first matches by a fall before losing in the quarterfinals. They then went on to win their first match in the wrestlebacks and lost in the wrestleback quarterfinals.
