(12/07/06)-- The Concordia/MSU Moorhead dual meet started with a bang but then slowly fizzled as the No.14-ranked Dragons cruised to a 30-3 victory in the opening dual meet of the season for both teams. The first match of the meet held all of the dramatics as Concordia's Matt Nyvold and MSU Moorhead's Joe Werner battled through the opening two periods of the match neither wrestler able to get the upperhand. Werner broke his finger at the end of the first period and wrestled the final two periods with his hand wrapped in a heavy tape bandage. The match finally swung in Nyvold's favor in the middle of the third period when he scored a reversal to take 6-3 lead. In the final minute, Nyvold was called for stalling and Werner was awarded a crucial point. Then, in the dying seconds with Nyvold on his stomach, trying to milk the clock and pick up the win, Werner was able to turn Nyvold and put him on his back for a near fall and the match-deciding three points. The last-second disappointment completely took the air off the Cobber bench and it wasn't until the match at 141 that Concordia was able to gain back some momentum. After the Dragon's Troy McFarland pinned Joe Leacox at 2:45 at 133, P.J. Mack stayed close enough to MSU M's Kelly Janke through the first 2-plus periods to have a chance at the end. Mack took advantage of the close score and scored a reversal in the final 10 seconds of his match against Janke to record a 5-4 victory and put Concordia on the board, trailing 9-3. That would be as close as the Cobbers would come as the Dragons won the final seven matched in the meet to come away with the 27-point victory. The matches at 149 and 157 were also very close, with both wrestlers having a chance to gain control of the bout. At 149, Steve Carlon outlasted Brandon Bartyzol 5-3 and then his teammate Brandon Kok did the same at 157 over the Cobbers' Tony Hewitt. Kyle Trout then seized control early against Lane Lunde at 165 and won 7-2. The NSIC Wrestler of the Week won all four of his matches at the Dragon Open last week. At 174, Skip Toops methodically scored points in all three periods to claim a 9-3 victory over Tanner Jorud. In the final three matches, the Dragon wrestlers all grabbed early leads and then steadily built on them throughout the match. Tyler Tubbs beat Theo Gagner 10-6 and then Matt Nelson came away with a 11-6 decision over Tony Hewitt. Both Gagner and Hewitt were wrestling up a weight class due to injuries for the Cobbers. In the heavyweight match, Joe Fracchini blanked Preston Lyles to close out the 30-3 win. Despite the lopsided score, Concordia improved upon their showing against the Dragons from last season. In 2005, MSU Moorhead beat the Cobbers 40-3 and had four pin falls in the match. Concordia will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they wrestle at the SCSU Husky Open hosted by St. Cloud State.
