(12/02/06)-- Concordia continued their early-season success at the Dragon Open hosted by MSU Moorhead on Saturday as they had nine wrestlers record at least three victories in the meet and placed three athletes in championship matches of their various weight classes. The Cobbers also placed 12 of their 21 wrestlers at the meet in the top six of their weight classes. Overall, Concordia wrestlers posted a 46-38 record during the meet. Leading the way for the Cobber matmen was freshman Matt Nyvold who won the White Division at the 125-lb weight class. The meet was separated into to divisions. The Red Division was for sophomore, junior and senior wrestlers and the White Division was for first-year collegiate wrestlers - although some coaches did enter experienced wrestlers in the White Division which makes the Cobber freshmen results even more noteworthy. Nyvold posted a perfect 3-0 record in the 125-lb weight class. All three wins came against wrestlers from top flight Division I, II or NAIA programs. He started the meet by beating Andy Hackenmueller of NDSU 7-6. He then downed Brandon Rifa of Jamestown in semifinals 5-2 and claimed the title by outlasting Casey Dschaak of MSU Moorhead 5-4 in the finals. The other two Concordia wrestlers that competed in the championship match of their weight class were Tanner Jorud and Dustin Roggenbuck. Jorud placed second at 174 by recording a pair of wins in the quarterfinals ans semifinals before losing a close 5-4 match to Kenny Moenkedick of NDSU. Roggenbuck opened the meet at 197 by pinning Jamie Zuniga of Rochester Community College at 1:59. He then went on to beat Heath Roberts 4-0 before losing to Lance Peters from Augustana in the finals. Other three-win Cobber competitors included Joe Leacox at 133, Josiah Simburger at 141, Cody Salo at 165, Lane Lunde at 165 and Theo Gagner at 174. Lunde finished third in his weight class in the White Division. He opened his day with a technical fall over Chris Herrmann of Rochester CC but then lost a tight 5-3 battle to Jake Grygelko. He then rebounded to pin Hermann at 3:02 in the third-place match. Salo and Gagner were the only two upperclassmen to place in the top six for CC. Salo finished 5th in the Red Division at 165 and Gagner brought home a fourth-place finish in the Red Division at 174. Concordia will host its first dual meet of the season when they square off against MSU Moorhead on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
