Gustavus Box Score - Now Online! MOORHEAD, Minn.-- On paper, the game between Concordia and third-ranked Gustavus appeared to be a huge mismatch. The Cobbers entered the game winless on the season and the Gusties had only lost once in their past 40 games against MIAC opponents. Good thing for the Cobbers that they don't play hockey on paper, because after 60 minutes of action on the ice, Concordia dropped a 2-1 decision to the defending conference champion Gusties. Concordia conceded possession and space in the middle of the rink throughout the game but clamped down on the vaunted Gustavus offensive attack in the defensive zone and held the Gusties to only two goals on 40 shots. Strengthened by senior captain goaltender Jenna Johnson, the Cobbers were able to withstand the early Gustavus onslaught and keep the game close throughout the first period. The Gustavus broke on top less than five minutes into the game but were then held off the scoreboard until the same point in the second period. Cobber killer Andrea Peterson scored the first goal for Gustavus. For Peterson, it was her fifth goal in the past three games against Concordia. After the first goal, everyone in the arena was waiting for the route to begin, but the resilient Cobbers led by Johnson and a tough defense failed to cave in to the nationally-ranked Gusties. Concordia was able to generate only a few quality scoring opportunities on the offensive end of the rink, but made the most of them when they did. After falling behind 2-0 on a goal from Christine Wicker, the Cobbers stunned the crowd by pulling to within one when captain Ceara Bergsrud scored her first collegiate goal on a breakaway at 18:15 of the middle period. The teams went back and forth in the third period with neither team being able to create a quality chance for most of the final 20 minutes. The best opportunity for the Cobbers to tie the game came midway through the period when Paige Stone missed the net from close range after receiving a pass from Bre Brian that left Gustavus goalie Kitty Hurley out of position to make a save. Johnson kept the Cobbers close in the final minutes of the game, making solid save after solid save. She finished the game with a season-high 38 saves. Hurley made 11 saves in goal for the Gusties to pick up her second win of the season. Gustavus outshot Concordia 40-12 for the game. Neither team was able to score on the power play. Concordia went 0-for-5, while Gustavus was shut out in their four chances. The two teams will finish the two-game series on Saturday, December 3 at 2:00pm at the Moorhead Sports Center.
