ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/26/10)-- Concordia went 0-for-7 on the power play on Friday night and lost 6-1 at St. Thomas. The loss knocks the Cobbers out of the playoff chase and drops their conference record 7-8-2. The Tommies are now 10-5-2 in league play and in third place in the MIAC standings. Concordia outshot St. Thomas in two of the three periods and wound up with a 33-26 edge for the game. The Cobbers felt the curse of the USA women's hockey team as they had quality chances but were never able to score a timely goal to get back in the game. In the end it was Concordia's inability to convert on the power play that sealed the team's feat. CC was held to only five shots on goal in their seven power play attempts. The second period wound up deciding the game. St. Thomas entered the period clinging to a 1-0 lead but then scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take a 3-0 lead. The Tommies had three goals in the first 28:11 of the game but only had 13 shots on goal. The Cobbers quickly countered to get back in the game. After UST scored at 8:11, CC junior Emily Sell notched a shorthanded goal at 8:37 to bring Concordia within two at 3-1. For Sell it was her 15th goal of the season which ties Katelyn Dold for the team lead. Still holding onto hopes of getting back in the game, Concordia watched St. Thomas scored two goals 1:35 apart in the back end of the middle period to put the game out of reach at 5-1. The Tommies would get the only goal of the third period to finish off the scoring. Tracy Skluzacek and Maddie Haroldson shared the goaltending duties for the Cobbers. Skluzacek started the game and made 11 saves in the first 34:45. Haroldson entered the game towards the end of the second period and made nine saves in 25:15. Lauren Bradel went the distance for the Tommies and turned aside 32 shots to earn her eighth win of the year. Concordia will finish off the 2009-10 season when they play the Tommies on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
