MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/30/10)-- It was a score line and shot total fitting for an all-star game. Concordia allowed eight goals and 51 shots on goals and fell 8-4 to No.10-ranked Gustavus on Friday in Moorhead. The Cobbers and Gusties combined for 12 goals and 76 shots on goal.

The loss ends a six-game unbeaten streak for Concordia as they fall to 10-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the MIAC. The Cobbers now fall into a tie for sixth place in the conference standings. The Gusties win for the ninth time in the last 10 games and move to 11-4-2 and 7-3-1 in league. GAC remains in third place.

The game's swing point came midway through the second period when Gustavus broke open a 4-3 game by scoring four goals in a span of 6:08 that bled into the opening minute of the third period. That stretch gave the Gusties a comfortable 8-3 lead and allowed them to coast for the final 19 minutes of play.

Concordia was never able to get on top of nationally ranked Gustavus. The Gusties opened the scoring at the 6:08 mark of the first period when freshman Lindsey Hjelm scored the first of her back-to-back goals in the period. Helm's opening goal on the power play was her teams leading ninth of the year. She would add to that total less than four minutes later when she scored an even-strength goal at 9:54.

Faced with the fact that they might get blown out for the third straight time against Gustavus, the Cobbers responded with one of their best stretches of hockey in the season as they scored three goals in a span of 12:55 at the end of the first period and beginning of the second.

Kit Hollway scored her sixth goal of the year to get the Concordia scoring started. For Hollway it was her third goal in the past two games. She scored at 14:47 of the opening frame on an assist from Kerry Blomberg. Gustavus then responded less than one minute later and CC trailed by two at 3-1.

The Cobbers then came out in the second period and scored the first goal of the period when Kayla Thorson knocked home a goal on the power play at 2:39. Katelyn Dold and Emily Sell picked up the assists on the play. True to the form of the game, the Gusties quickly countered with a power play goal exactly three minutes later. Alyssa Gaulrapp's fourth goal of the year once again pushed the lead back to two goals and kept CC from gaining any momentum.

The final push for the lead for Concordia came in the eighth minute of the middle period. Macy Leland scored at 7:42 on assists from Kayla Hendrickson and Sara Sonnenberg and once again the Cobbers were within one at 4-3. That's when the roof caved in on Concordia's upset hopes. Gustavus scored two goals a little over two minutes apart starting at 14:05 and then added a third in the final :11 seconds of play in the period. GAC then came out in the third and added a fourth consecutive goal at the :13 second mark. The two goals :24 seconds apart in the two periods officially ended the hopes for the Cobbers.

Concordia leading scorer Katelyn Dold finished off the scoring with her 10th goal of the year at 17:40. Ali Nelson earned the assist on the play.

Concordia used all three goals that were suited up in the game. Senior Maddie Haroldson started the game and stopped 11 shots in the first period of play. Desiree Goret entered at the start of the second and made 18 saves. Tracy Skluzacek finished off the game by playing all 20 minutes in the third period. She stopepd 14 of the 15 shots she faced. Emily Klatt went the distance for Gustavus and made 21 saves to pick up her fourth win of the year.

The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
