WINONA, Minn. (12/11/09)-- For the second straight series, the Cobbers felt the sting of a chilly offense as they outshot St. Mary's 29-18 on Friday but failed to score and lost 2-0 in Winona. The Cobbers have scored only one goal in their last two series openers. Last Friday Concordia put up 34 shots, scored only two goals and lost to Bethel 3-2. The loss drops Concordia's record to 5-5 in all games and 2-3-0 in the MIAC. St. Mary's improves to 4-4-1 and 3-1-1 in league play. The Cardinals scored both of their goals in a little over five minutes midway through the third period. The first two periods were scoreless affairs with each team getting blanked on a pair of power play attempts. In the opening 40 minutes of play, Concordia held a 17-11 edge in shots on goal but was never able to get a puck past SMU netminder Kaye Collier. Cobber freshman goalie Deireee Goret was also pitching a shutout as she stopped all 11 shots she faced in the first two frames. The game changed in the 11th minute of play in the final period. After Concordia won a faceoff, St. Mary's was able to get on the board when Nicole Olson notched her fourth goal of the season at 10:56. In the next five minutes of play the Cobbers tried for the equalizer but Collier turned aside six straight shots before the Cardinals got their insurance goal. Ingrid Klockars finished off a pass from Madison Sienko to give SMU a 2-0 lead at the 16:14 mark. Goret finished with 16 saves in the game and was handed her first loss of the season. After winning her first two collegiate starts, Goret is now 2-1 on the year. Collier stopped all 29 shots she faced in the game to pick up her second shutout of the season and fourth overall win. The teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Winona.
