MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/13/09)-- Concordia spotted UW-Superior three goals through the first two periods and then staged a hard-fought third-period comeback but came up just short and lost 3-2 to the Yellowjackets in Moorhead on Friday. The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers, who started the year with two straight wins, and evens their overall record at 2-2. Superior wins for the first time on the year and moves to 0-1-1. UW-Superior started the scoring just 1:04 into the opening period. That would be the only scoring in the first period with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Cobbers 15-6. Concordia would finally get their skating legs in the game in the second period. Despite giving up a pair of shorthanded goals, the Cobbers outshot Superior 16-9. The Cobbers would start their comeback at 3:43 of the final period. Emily Sell notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season and CC was back in the game. It took the Cobbers less than six minutes to get their second as freshman Jenna Westerham recorded her third goal of the year at 9:31. Unfortunately that would be the final goal of the game and CC would have to settle for the one-goal loss. Concordia outshot the Yellowjackets 18-12 in the final 20 minutes but could never overcome the three-goal deficit. For the game, Concordia outshot Superior 40-36. CC goalie Maddie Haroldson made 33 saves, while UWS netminder Melissa Kunzelman stopped 38 shots to earn the win. Concordia was also done in by the power play as they only went 1-for-8 on the power play. The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. on the north rink of the Moorhead Sports Center.
