SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/06/09)-- It didn't take Concordia very long to find their scoring touch in 2009-10. Ace Gregg's crew lit up the board for eight goals in the season opener en route to an 8-1 win over Marian in Fond du Lac, Wis on Friday. The Cobbers scored a pair of goals in the first and third periods and exploded for four goals in the middle frame as they won their season opener for the second straight season. A pair of players had two goals each for Concordia in the opener. Junior Emily Sell and sophomore Katelyn Dold posted two goals each and helped the team to the seven-goal win. Kayla Hendrickson had a goal and two assists for CC and freshman Jenna Westerham notched her first collegiate goal and chipped in a helper. Concordia split the goaltending duties with senior Maddie Haroldson getting the start and playing for the first two periods. She stopped all five shots she faced in earning her first win of the season. Desiree Goret played in the third period and made seven saves. The Cobbers jumped on the board early, scoring at 3:28 of the opening period when Dold scored the first of her two goals. That was followed by a power play goal at 9:08 off the stick of Kristyn Voegele. Voegele's goal was the eventual game winner. CC held onto a 2-0 lead until the 3:09 mark of the second period. Sell nothced the first of her two goals and that was followed by another power play goal at 8:36 from Kit Holloway. Dold and Hendrickson added goals :10 seconds apart towards the end of the period and Concordia took a comfortable 6-0 lead into the final frame. In the third period, Sell and Westerham would finish off the scoring with Sell's goal coming on the power play. The Cobbers finished the game 4-for-13 on the power play in a contest that was bogged down by 18 penalties. Both teams took nine penalties in the game. The Sabres were 1-for-5 on the man advantage and tallied their only goal of the game at 2:45 of the third period. Concordia outshot Marian 36-13 for the game. The two teams will finish off the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. and then the Cobbers will head to Stevens Point, Wis. to take on UW-Stevens Point on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m.
