Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/26/09)--
No.4-seeded Concordia allowed a pair of second-period goals and fell 2-1 to No.5-seeded St. Olaf in the first round of the MIAC playoffs on Thursday in Moorhead. The Oles advance to play at No.1 Gustavus on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
The loss ends the Cobbers' season. CC finished the year with a 10-11-5 mark after making the conference playoffs for the second straight season.
Concordia jumped on the board first when Kayla Thorson converted a chance from in close on the power play at the 4:05 mark of the first period. The Cobbers had come out in the first four minutes and taken the play to the Oles. Thorson's goal was her fifth of the season and Jen Bextermueller and Katelyn Dold were credited with the assists on the play.
The game started to turn in favor of the Oles in the later stages of the first frame. St. Olaf started to control the puck in the neutral zone and was able to break free of the Concordia forecheck. St. Olaf was unable to score in the opening 20 minutes and CC took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. In the first period of play, Concordia was able to outshoot the Oles 9-7.
The Cobbers came out in the second period and had another quality chance to score but Alyssa Dahl's shot hit off the inside of the goalpost and ricocheted away from the net. The early miss signaled the sign of things to come as Concordia had several quality opportunities for the final 40 minutes but were unable to convert and were held to one goal for the game.
St. Olaf (9-13-4) finally got on the board midway through the second period when Katie Iraci scored the first of her two goals at 9:22. Iraci pounced on a loose puck that had slid across the middle of the goalmouth and slammed it in from the right side of the net. Kim McClintock and Meghan Stumpf had the assists on Iraci's sixth goal of the year. Iraci would score the game winner with less than two minutes to go in the period. Once again she was "Katie-on-the spot" as she was standing by the left side of the goal, had the puck bounce onto her stick after a scrum in front of the goal and slid it past CC goalie Julie York before she could move over and make the save. Kelly Biddle and Kari McClintock picked up the assists.
The Oles took control in the second period which was the best played 20 minutes of the game as both teams raced up and down the ice with the puck. For the period, the St. Olaf held a 15-11 edge in shots on goal.
The third period was more conservative, especially after the halfway point when the Oles were content to chip the puck into the neutral zone and keep the Cobbers away from the goal. The best chance for either team came with less than one minute to play in the game. With Concordia killing a penalty, CC head coach pulled York for an extra attacker. The puck came to Mandi Samuelson behind the net and her wraparound attempt just slid off the end of her stick as she tried to beat Olaf goalie Erin McNamara who had got caught on the other side of the cage.
St. Olaf once again outshot the Cobbers in the third period and held a 34-27 edge for the game. York stopped 32 shots while McNamara made 26 saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
Concordia was 1-for-2 on the power play and the Oles were held scoreless in their five man-advantage situations.
