Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/21/09)--
A point was all they needed. A point was all they got. Concordia needed only one point to secure a home game in the first round of the MIAC playoffs and that is exactly what they earned as they skated to a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Kate's on Saturday. The tie means that the Cobbers earned the No.4 seed in the playoffs and will host No.5-seed St. Olaf on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
The overtime tie marks the seventh overtime game of the season. That is a school record. It is also the fourth time in the last six games that Concordia has been tied at the end of regulation and needed to go into overtime. The tie pushes the Cobbers' regular season record to 10-10-5 overall and 7-7-4 in the MIAC.
For the second straight game Concordia held an advantage in shots on goal but couldn't come up with the timely goal to put the Wildcats away. CC outshot CSC 34-21 in the game but had only one goal to show for it.
The lone goal of the game for the Cobbers came from Becca Kent who notched all three of the team's goals in the series. After the two teams skated through a scoreless first period, Kent made the score 1-0 in favor of CC at the 11:43 mark of the second period. Kit Holloway and Allie Bondy picked up assists on the play.
Concordia only allowed St. Kate's 14 shots on goal in the first two periods and it looked like CC would come away with a 1-0 win after holding the Wildcats to only six shots in the final 20 minutes. Unfortunately CSC would score in the final three minutes of play when Cassie Rooney matched Kent's effort by scoring her third goal of the series. Rooney's goal at 17:30 sent the game into overtime for the second straight night.
Unlike Friday when the Wildcats scored less than :30 seconds into the extra period, CC was able to shut down St. Kate's and only allowed one shot on goal in the five-minute overtime period. The Cobbers also were only able to manage one shot on goal as the teams tightened up in their own defensive zone.
Needing a win to advance to the conference playoffs, the Wildcats pulled their goalie late in the overtime period. Concordia was able to keep CSC off the board and came away with the crucial point.
Cobber goalie Julie York made 20 saves in the game while St. Kate's netminder Mel Gerten turned aside 33 shots. Neither team scored on the power play. CC was 0-for-2 in man-advantage situations and the Wildcats were 0-for-4.
Concordia advances to the conference playoffs for the second straight season. Last year CC lost to St. Thomas in the semifinals. This year the Cobbers will host St. Olaf on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center with the winner moving on to face No.1 seed Gustavus in St. Peter in the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 28.
