Gameday Game Recap:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/20/09)-- It's probably not the way head coach Ace Gregg and the rest of the Cobbers imagined clinching a spot in the MIAC, but in the end, it counts just the same. Concordia lost 3-2 in overtime at St. Kate's on Saturday but thanks to a loss by St. Ben's, CC earned their second straight trip to the conference tournament.

Concordia is now 10-10-4 overall and 7-7-3 in the MIAC. The Cobbers have 17 points in league and are three points clear of a two-way tie for sixth place in the standings with only one game left in the regular season. The top five teams from the conference make the MIAC tournament beginning on Thursday. The Wildcats jump into fifth place. CSC is now 10-11-2 overall and 7-9-1 in league play. They need to win on Saturday in order to clinch a spot in the postseason. If the Wildcats beat the Cobbers on Saturday then the two teams will face off again on Thursday at Ridder Arena in the first round of the playoffs. In that scenario CSC would have earned the No.4 seed and would host CC who would have fallen into the No.5 spot.

The Cobbers continue to struggle in overtime periods in 2008-09. Concordia has now played in a school-record six overtime games and have not won a single of those contests. CC is 0-2-4 in the six extra-period games.

Concordia started the game on a high note. The Cobbers came out and dominated the first period and did exactly what they needed to do in order to come away with a road win. CC outshot St. Kate's 18-8 in the first period. Unfortunately they only had one goal to show for their effort. Freshman Becca Kent scored the first of her two goals in the game when she lit the lamp at 4:55. Kaylee Black earned the assist on the even-strength goal.

The second period turned in favor of the Wildcats. CSC came out like a team on the verge of playoff elimination and promptly outshot CC 15-9. Like the Cobbers in the first, the Wildcats scored only one goal despite the disparity in shots on goal. St. Kate's tied the game at 1-1 at the 4:28 mark when Cassie Rooney scored the first of her two goals in the game.

The third period returned to the side of maroon and gold. Concordia held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal but the teams traded power play goals midway through the period. Kent gave the Cobbers a 2-1 lead when she scored her second goal of the game at 8:10. For Kent it was her team-leading 11th goal of the year. Black picked up her second assist of the game. She now has 10 helpers on the season.

The lead was short-lived. St. Kate's returned the favor when they score a power play goal of their own just 1:34 later. After Allie Bondy was called for checking at 8:47, CSC tied the game at 9:44 on Rooney's second goal of the game. For Rooney it was her ninth goal of the year.

The two teams then skated through a scoreless second half of the third period.

The overtime frame officially lasted :16 seconds. The Wildcats won the faceoff and then got control of the puck in the Cobber end and Michaela Michaelson finished the game off with her team-leading 16th goal of the year.

For the game Concordia outshot St. Kate's 43-30. Cobber goalie Amber Malcolm made 27 saves in the game. Wildcat goalie Mel Gerten stopped 41 shots to earn her eighth win of the season. CC was 1-for-4 on the power and CSC went 1-for-6.

The two teams will finish off their series on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2:05 at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. A win or tie by the Cobbers would earn CC the No.4 seed in the playoffs and a home game in the first round on Thursday. A St. Kate's win would bring the teams back together on Thursday at Ridder Arena. A CSC win would mean the Wildcats would earn the No.4 seed and CC would be the No.5 seed.
