Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/09)--
Concordia celebrated Senior Night on Saturday but instead it was the Cobber seniors who put on the party. Three different CC seniors factored in the scoring sheet and senior goaltender Amber Malcolm stopped all 26 shots she faced to help Concordia record a 7-0 win over Augsburg in Moorhead. The win helps the Cobbers complete the two-game sweep over the Auggies and keeps CC locked into fourth place in the MIAC standings. Concordia is now 10-7-2 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play.
The game was almost a carbon copy of Friday night's game between the two teams. After skating through a tie in the first period, Concordia exploded for multiple goals in the second and third periods to win going away. On Saturday both teams failed to score in the first 20 minutes and the game was tied at 0-0 heading into the second frame.
The second period fireworks didn't get started until midway through the period. Freshman Kit Holloway ignited the fire by scoring her first collegiate goal at the 9:00 mark. The power play goal was one of four for the Cobbers on the day. CC would finish the game 4-for-4 in man-advantage situations. Senior Brit Vander Kooy picked up the assist on the play. She would start the senior scoring spree.
Becca Kent then followed with the second power play goal of the period at 14:45. That would trigger a spree of four Concordia goals in the next 3:48. Vander Kooy then added a goal to her assist when she scored on the power play at 15:18. Kent and fellow senior Bre Bian added the assists. For Bian it would be the first of her three assists on the day. The last senior to step onto the scoresheet was Alyssa Dahl. She scored the first of her two goals in a span of :27 at the 18:06 mark. Dahl then tacked on another at 18:33 to give the Cobbers a 5-0 lead. Bian was given an assist on both of Dahl's goals.
A pair of freshman finished off the scoring for Concordia in the third period. Katelyn Dold, who had a hat trick on Friday, notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season at 4:41 of the final frame. Emily Sell then finished off the scoring by tacking on the extra point at 14:45. Kayla Thorson was credited with her team-leading 12th assist on the play.
Concordia outshot Augsburg 38-26. While the Cobbers were 4-for-4 on the power play, the Auggies were held scoreless in their 11 power play attempts.
Malcolm earned her second shutout on the season and is now 3-1 on the year. Augsburg once again split the goalie duties. Toni Menth played the first two periods and made 26 saves. Grace Edgar played in the third period and stopped five shots.
The Cobbers will now hit the road for their final three series of the regular season. Concordia will play at St. Ben's on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7.
