Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/23/09)--
Concordia gave up a single goal in each of the first two periods and then two empty-net goals late in the third period and lost 4-0 to No.7-ranked St. Thomas in Moorhead on Friday.
The Cobbers had quality chances throughout the game, including a pair of breakaways in the second period, but could never beat All-American goalie Lauren Bradel and lost for the third time in the last four games.
CC is now 8-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play. With the loss, Concordia drops from third place in the MIAC standings all the way down to fifth place. The Tommies end a two-game winless streak and move to 10-3-1 in all games and 7-1-1 in the MIAC. UST remains only one point behind league-leading Gustavus.
St. Thomas scored their first goal of the game against the run of play. The Cobbers had the better of the chances in the first seven minutes of play in the opening period. Concordia had the first five shots on goal before the Tommies managed to take their first shot. UST would capitalize on their second chance. After winning a face off, St. Thomas crashed the net and was able get hold of the puck and Amy Zimniewicz slammed home her fifth goal of the season.
The two teams skated through the remainder of the first period without scoring another goal. The Cobbers held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal in the period but like their past two games, had nothing to show for their effort.
The Tommies added to their lead midway through the second period when Marie Omann scored her first goal of the season at 11:54. The game may have been determined in the second period when the Cobbers had a pair of breakaways but did not get the puck past Bradel.
The third period went back-and-forth and had limited stoppages which helped UST hang onto their two-goal lead. Trailing 2-0 with under two minutes to play, Cobber head coach decided to pull goalie Julie York. Concordia had one shot on goal before the Tommies were able to clear the puck out of the zone and Taylor Schluter raced onto the loose puck and skated into the Cobber zone and slid it into the open net at 19:34. The same play happened in the final seconds and Rachel Zilles was able to score as the final buzzer sounded.
After the two teams had each taken 19 shots on goal in the first two periods, St. Thomas had a 14-4 edge in the third period and a 33-23 margin for the game. Bradel made 23 saves to earn her second shutout of the season and 13th of her career. York stopped 29 shots for CC.
The two teams will finish their two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
