Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/17/09)--
It's not what Concordia head coach Ace Gregg wanted out of their home series with Bethel, but fortunately it wasn't a total disaster as the Cobbers were able to salvage one point from the weekend as they skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with the Royals in Moorhead on Saturday. The one point for the tie helps the Cobbers stay in third place in the MIAC standings. CC is now 5-2-1 in the league and 8-5-2 overall. Concordia has 11 conference points and is one ahead of Bethel who is now 4-2-2 in the MIAC and 5-6-3 in all games. The Royals have 10 points in the league and are in fourth place in the conference standings.
The teams traded goals in the first and third periods in the game with the Cobbers not being able to take more than a two-goal lead and the Royals not being able to take a lead. Like Friday night when Concordia netted an early goal, CC scored less than one minute into the game on Saturday. Bre Bian scored a power play goal at the :57 second mark to give Concordia an early 1-0 lead. For Bian it was her fifth goal of the season. Brit Vander Kooy got the assist on the play as she took the shot that was tipped in for the score.
Bethel tied the game for the first time with less than six minutes to play in the first period. Kassy Sullivan scored her fifth goal of the year at 14:43 to push the score to 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The two teams would skate through a scoreless second period before Concordia would break up the tie game at 5:04 of the third period. Kayla Thorson gave the Cobbers a 2-1 lead when she finished off a pass from Katelyn Dold. CC held onto the lead until the final five minutes of regulation. BU put home the game-tying goal at 15:37 when Paige Lemieux scored her first goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score in the final four minutes of the third period or in the five-minute overtime session. Bethel had the only two shots on goal in the overtime but the Cobbers held a decided edge in shots for the entire game. CC outshot Bethel 43-27 for the game.
Concordia was 2-for-8 on the power play and the Royals were 1-for-4 as three of the game's four goals were scored via special teams.
Cobber goalie Julie York stopped 25 shots while Bethel goalie Beth Spurrier turned aside 41 shots.
Concordia will host St. Thomas in a two-game series next weekend.
