Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/16/09)--
Concordia gave up four straight goals in the second and third periods and lost to Bethel 5-3 in Moorhead on Friday. The Cobbers jumped out to a 1-0 just two minutes into the game but then gave up two goals in the final 6:18 of the second period and then two more in the first 8:15 of the third period to grab a 4-1 lead. CC then scored a pair of goals midway through the final frame but couldn't pull even and lost for the second straight game.
With the loss Concordia falls to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the MIAC. It is the first time all season that the Cobbers have lost two consecutive games. Bethel wins for the second straight game and improves to 5-6-2 in all games and 4-2-1 in league play.
Bethel had barely gotten off the bus by the time Concordia had taken a 1-0 lead. Mandi Samuelson's shot from the top of the circles found its way past Bethel goalie Beth Spurrier at exactly the 2:00 mark. Kristyn Voegele was awarded the assist on the play. The Cobbers controlled the first 10 minutes of play but then the tides started to turn and the Royals were able to maintain pressure in the CC zone in the final six minutes of the opening period.
The Royals would keep the pressure up in the opening minutes of the second period. After being outshot 6-5 in the first 20 minutes, Bethel roared back to carry a 15-5 edge in shots in the second period. Their hard work paid off with a pair of special teams goals in the final seven minutes of play. The first goal came when BU was on a 5-on-3 power play. Rachael Geng's shot from the point somehow managed to elude all the players in front of the goal and slide past Amber Malcolm. The goal at 13:42 broke up Malcolm's shutout bid. The next BU tally came when Concordia was on the power play. The Royals cleared the puck into the Cobber end. Malcolm came out of the goal and tried to clear the puck up the near boards to one of her teammates. Unfortunately her pass slid off the end of her stick and right onto the stick of Jenna Bullock who was following the play on the forecheck. She took the puck and was able to fire the puck past Malcolm.
Bethel would add to their lead with an even-strength goal at 6:46 and then another at 8:15. With a 4-1 advantage it looked as if the Royals would cruise to the win. Concordia had other ideas as they refused to give up and was rewarded with two power play goals in a span of 4:16. Samuelson scored her second goal of the game at 10:53 to bring CC within two at 4-2. Kaylee Black and Kayla Thorson picked up assists on the play. Brit Vander Kooy then upped the suspense level when she scored her second goal of the year at 15:09. Vander Kooy took a shot from the middle of the ice just inside the blue line and the puck sailed off her stick and into the top corner of the net as it hit the underside of the crossbar where it meets the pipe.
With the score at 4-3, the Cobbers tried to press the issue and come away with the game winner. Unfortunately Black was whistled for a tripping penalty at 15:35. Concordia then got a reprieve when Bethel forward Sandra Felton was also called for a tripping penalty just :16 seconds later. CC then went on a power play after a BU penalty at 16:38. On the power play the Cobbers tried to force the issue by pulling Malcolm. They were unable to score on the power play and then Bethel sealed the win when they scored an empty-net goal at 19:24.
For the game Concordia outshot Bethel 29-28. CC was 2-for-4 on the power play and Bethel went 1-for-4 in man-advantage situations. Malcolm made 23 saves in goal for the Cobbers. Spurrier had 26 stops for the Royals and picked up her fifth win of the season.
The two teams will finish the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
