Concordia gave up five goals in the third period and sang the redemption blues against Adrian on Saturday in Moorhead. The Cobbers trailed 2-1 to Adrian heading into the final period of play and then watched the Bulldogs score five times in the final 20 minutes to atone for a 3-2 loss to CC on Friday. The loss drops Concordia to 8-4-1 overall on the season while Adrian moves to 9-5-1.
Adrian scored the only goal in the first 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs got on the board with a power play goal at 11:31 of the first period. Nicky Futers scored her first goal of the year to give Adrian a 1-0 lead. That lead would last until the first minute of the second period. Kaylee Black tied the game at 1-1 with only :26 seconds gone in the middle frame. For Black it was her fifth goal of the season and second in as many games. Bre Bian earned the only assist on the play. The Bulldogs regained their one-goal lead midway through the second period when Stacey Kempson scored the first of her two goals in the game at 13:47.
The game would unravel for the Cobbers in the first two minutes of the final period. That's when Kempson scored her second consecutive goal at the :14 second mark of the third frame. Brooke Zaleski scored at 1:54 to open the lead to three goals and put Concordia behind 4-1. Adrian moved the lead to 5-1 before Concordia scored its second goal of the game when Kristyn Voegele scored her second goal of the year at 15:37. Black and Bian were credited with the assists on the goal.
Adrian finished off the game by scoring a pair of empty net goals in the final 48 seconds of the game. The two goals pushed the final score to 7-2 and gave the two teams a split for the series.
Concordia outshot Adrian 40-25 for the game. The Cobbers were done in by an ice cold power play unit. CC went scoreless in their nine power play attempts. Adrian was 2-for-6 on the power play in the game.
Cobber goalie Maddie Haroldson made 18 saves in the game while Bulldog goaltender Dana Timm stopped 38 shots to earn her eighth win of the year.
Concordia will now turn its attention to conference play when they host Bethel in a two-game series on Jan. 16-17 at the Moorhead Sports Center.
