Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/09/09)--
Concordia used a 38-save performance from senior goalie Amber Malcolm and three power play goals to edge Adrian (Mich.) 3-2 in Moorhead on Friday. The victory avenges a pair of losses to the Bulldogs last season. The Cobbers have not lost in the past three games and improve to 8-3-1 on the season. Adrian loses for the first time in the past five games and falls to 8-5-1.
Malcolm paved the way for the Cobbers to come away with the win on Friday. She stopped 38 of the 40 shots she faced as Concordia was outshot 40-26 in the game. The teams traded goals in the first and second periods and then the two goalies shut the door and the teams skated through a scoreless third period.
Concordia got their first power play goal in the first period when Kaylee Black notched her fourth goal of the year at 6:38. Mandi Samuelson and Kayla Thorson were credited with the assists on the play. That would be the only goal of the opening 20 minutes of play and CC would carry a 1-0 lead into the break.
Adrian tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period. Jessica Grubbs scored on the power play at 10:22 with help from Alexis Glenn and Andrea Soloko. For Grubbs it was her eighth goal of the year. The Cobbers wasted little time in retaking the lead. Samuelson made the score 2-1 just 2:59 later when she tallied her fourth goal of the year. Thorson earned her second assist of the game on the goal at 13:21. The Bulldogs then tied the game on a Brooke Zeleski goal at 16:26. It looked as if the teams would be tied at 2-2 heading into the third period but then Grubbs was sent off on a hooking call at 17:04. Katelyn Dold continued her hot scoring hand to give Concordia a 3-2 lead. She scored at 19:03 with assists from Thorson and Black. The game-winning goal was Dold's fifth of the year and fourth in the last two games.
The game was then handed over to Malcolm and Adrian netminder Dana Timm who combined to make 19 saves in the final period. Adrian outshot CC 11-8 in the third period and the Cobbers were able to hold off the Bulldogs in the final minute of play when they pulled Timm with :49 seconds to play.
The Cobbers finished the game by going 3-for-6 on the power play. Adrian was only 1-for-7 in man-advantage situations. Concordia took eight penalties and the Bulldogs were whistled for seven infractions including a 10-minute misconduct.
The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
